The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald to a two-year AHL contract with the rockford Icehogs, reinforcing leadership and grit on their developing blue line.
Earned trust after joining on a tryout, now rewarded with two-year deal
The Rockford IceHogs made it official on Monday: Cavan Fitzgerald is back for two more years.
The 28-year-old blueliner has signed a two-year AHL contract after proving himself last season while playing on a professional tryout.
Rockford, IL – The Rockford IceHogs and General Manager Mark Bernard announced Monday that the team has signed defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald to a two-year AHL contract.
Fitzgerald didn’t waste time making an impression.
His dependable play, physicality, and steady presence quickly earned him a place as one of the club’s most valuable players. He became a tone-setter on and off the ice.
Named team MVP and hardest hitter by his peers
By season’s end, Fitzgerald had earned serious recognition from those around him.
He was voted both team MVP and Hardest Hitter at the IceHogs’ End of Year Awards, a testament to the respect he commanded in the locker room.
He finished the season with eight goals and 22 points across 63 games, leading all Rockford defensemen in goals.
His +5 rating and role as assistant captain further underscored his importance to the group.
373 AHL games and counting, a proven veteran voice
The Boston native isn’t new to the grind of the AHL.
Despite going undrafted, Fitzgerald has carved out a solid career with 373 games under his belt across stints with the San Jose Barracuda, Charlotte Checkers, Chicago Wolves, and now Rockford.
He brings more than size at 6-foot-1, he brings experience that young players can lean on.
His leadership qualities were evident during his time with the Wolves, where he wore an ‘A’ during their 2022 Calder Cup championship run.
A stabilizing force for Blackhawks’ rising prospects
The Blackhawks organization isn’t just filling out a depth chart.
They’re making an intentional move to add strong voices to their AHL room, and Fitzgerald fits that mold. As Rockford becomes home to Chicago’s next wave of prospects, players like him will be critical.
He models the habits, consistency, and mindset required at the pro level.
For a franchise in transition, this kind of presence in the minors is invaluable.
NHL call-up not off the table if he keeps trending up
Fitzgerald may not have cracked an NHL lineup yet, but he’s still writing his story. With another strong season in Rockford, the door could open.
His game has matured, and he’s shown he can be a difference-maker when it matters.
For now, the IceHogs have a trusted leader locked in. And the Blackhawks have taken another quiet but meaningful step in building the right development environment from the ground up.
