Chicago Blackhawks eye 30-goal scorer to boost scoring and fast-track rebuild with Frank Nazar

If the Chicago Blackhawks are serious about accelerating their rebuild, NHL insider John Buccigross has a name that could help change the outlook overnight: Nikolaj Ehlers.

Fast, skilled, and heading into a contract year, Ehlers fits the exact mold of the high-impact winger that could complement Frank Nazar on the second line and reshape the team’s offensive identity.

Ehlers’ 7-year, $42 million contract is set to expire at season’s end, leaving him as a pending UFA. For the Blackhawks, who have the cap space and a massive need at left wing, the timing couldn’t be better.

Buccigross believes pairing Ehlers with Nazar would provide the offensive spark Chicago has lacked since beginning the rebuild.

This season, Ehlers put up 63 points in 69 games—24 goals and 39 assists.

But it’s not just the numbers.

He plays fast, makes smart reads, and rarely takes a shift off. His play style—built on pace and creativity—mirrors the kind of game Nazar plays.

Together, they could form a high-octane duo that pressures defenders and forces mismatches every night.

Bringing in Ehlers wouldn’t just elevate one line. It would create lineup versatility. Teuvo Teravainen could be used up and down the roster, giving head coach Luke Richardson options he hasn’t had in recent years.

The ability to move pieces without losing cohesion is exactly what this young team needs.

Whether or not the Jets decide to move on from Ehlers could depend on how far they go this spring. If Winnipeg falls short—particularly if they’re eliminated by the Dallas Stars—there’s a good chance Ehlers explores his options.

Murat Ates of The Athletic reports the winger could command around $7.5 million annually on his next contract and currently holds a 10-team no-trade clause.

Cap space isn’t the issue.

What matters now is whether Kyle Davidson is ready to invest in proven talent that complements his core.

Nikolaj Ehlers would bring speed, experience, and vision—all qualities that could elevate Frank Nazar’s development and push the Blackhawks out of the division’s basement.
